Labeled Strings

Good day,

I am completely new to building and playing instruments, and decided to buy and build a minstrel banjo kit as a fun way to learn both topics.

One thing I’m hanged up on is stringing the banjo. I notice that the kit came with 5 strings, labeled 1 through 5. Am I just overthinking this and should string left to right on the fingerboard: 5, 4, 3 ,2 1?

Thanks in advance for any tips/guidance.

The thumb (short) string is number 5
